Anthony Cheetham, HoZ Chairman, announced today that Neil Belton is to join the Company as Editorial Director and Publisher of a new list at Head of Zeus. The list will focus primarily on non-fiction, but will also encompass literary fiction.
Neil Belton was previously an Editor at Faber, Jonathan Cape and at Granta. In the course of an enviable career he has published and edited a variety of highly successful and influential authors including Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs and Steel), Stephen Jay Gould (Wonderful Life), Orlando Figes (A People’s Tragedy), Will Hutton (The State We’re In), Brian Keenan (An Evil Cradling), Eric Lomax (The Railway Man), Misha Glenny (The Balkans) and James Hamilton Patterson’s Empire of the Clouds. He has also published important and controversial books about contemporary Ireland, including Fintan O’Toole’s Ship of Fools, Killing Rage by Eamon Collins and Voices from the Grave by Ed Moloney.
Anthony Cheetham said ‘Neil is one of the most distinguished editors in British publishing. He combines a formidable intellect, with a broad spectrum of interests, exacting standards of excellence and a subtle appreciation of market trends. We have worked together before and I am delighted to renew our collaboration.’
Neil will take up his position in January 2015 and work alongside Richard Milbank, who will continue to oversee his own list of non-fiction titles and series.
Neil Belton commented ‘Anthony Cheetham is both an extraordinary entrepreneur and a great publisher with a passion for ideas. He convinced me many years ago, when I was a young academic editor, that I was really a trade publisher and then became a creative and supportive boss. Rejoining him feels like coming home.’
